Approval from fellow members
Is there any way by which fellow members (non-admins) can review and approve translations by other members, similar to what Launchpad has? In that way we can bypass admin approval even if the admins don't respond. If there is no such way, admins please respond and take necessary action.
My response
Hi Anirudhdha,
Thanks for your concern. Following is my response to your question:
There are few different reasons why the number keeps growing:
a) Right now none of the admins check this place every day.
b) A lot of the strings which are submitted by admins, can't be approved by themselves (I have a lot of strings which are still waiting for other admins).
c) Our goal is to not to get too concerned with the quantity, but the quality of the translation. When we started a lot of the translations were just copied and pasted the english version, or rewriting the same word in bengali- both are unacceptable- unless the word is heavily used in that form. We sometimes keep them as it is for time being.
d) Some of the translations are not really well done, so we wait for better suggestions. Hence they are not approved but not declined right away so that others can use the original translation and make it better.
To address some of the other concerns in this thread:
a) If any one wants to complain against any one, please go ahead and do so. Just note that, this might be the cultural problem for some of the members; in Drupal community such discourse and attitude is not usually appreciated. The rule of thumb is, you have to make your own effort, before you can blame on some one else. For example, this thread was created and the issue is being addressed within 24 hrs.
b) Only admins can approve strings. There is no other way around. If there is a need, then we will consider adding new admins. We are pretty open about this. This is not the final list, but we may be interested in users who have significant contribution and have demonstrated good communication skill.
This Bengali language project is very new. We had to go through a lot of trouble to get this project up. Saying that, as the project is now running we appreciate each of your contributions. We are in a lot better standing than many other language projects. If you have any concern, question regarding anything, please communicate with each other.
Regards,
-Tanjir
Tanjir, thanks for the reply.
Tanjir, thanks for the reply. I'm quite new to Drupal translation. I've done translations for Ubuntu on Launchpad and I was a bit surprised to find so many strings awaiting review.
I'll try to help as much as I can in the translations, but I hope the group admins do check the project status often.
Regarding quality vs quanity, even I'll vote for quality, and, yes, achieving a desirable quality does take a considerable amount of time and effort.

Welcome to the group!
Really glad to see some one experienced to join to the group! I am hoping we will get some impressive work from you in future! :) Welcome again!
Welcome to the group!
got posted twice.. can't remove it.
Thanks Tanjir for your reply
Thanks Tanjir for your reply (and actions as well regarding translation). I think you'll admit the fact that submitting translations a lot & seeing them not getting approved is quite frustrating for members & discourages new members. FYI I created an issue with query 19 days ago http://localize.drupal.org/node/4064 and got no reply yet.
This is impossible for few of the people in the administration to assure quality - since you've taken responsibilities you have to make it done, please do the hard work by yourselves or increase number of people in administration. In your reply you admitted admins don't visit the page daily, but don't you think it is administrator's responsibilities to check the page regularly (not daily)? Members always communicate, what is now needed for this community is active admins and communication between them.
Bangla is spoken by many many peoples, so it's community should be in well state than many other language communities. There are good translators in plenty (look at facebook translation activities) please ensure there are proper people in administration.
Wishing great success of this project.
Response to your questions..
Thanks for your reply. Here are my replies to your questions:
I agree this is frustrating for some users to see their translations pending for long time- but is very expected in projects like this.
One thing is very obvious that you are not happy about moderation and administration of this group. As I mentioned previously, this was not very easy task to get this project started. It took really long time. Comparing to the time between each responses what we were getting members of this group are very lucky. I am not saying this is the best, there are a lot of room to improve. But as I stated earlier, this group is very new- so we need time to understand our members and find out the right and responsible individuals to be moderators (again, if needed).
